The Inner Workings of Red Giant Stars
Sunspot, filaments, plages, and flares — visible signs of the Sun’s magnetic field riddle its atmosphere. But divining magnetic activity inside the Sun is another matter entirely.
We can’t directly see the magnetic fields within stars, and that makes it difficult to connect a star’s visible tortured gas with the inner workings of its magnetic field. Everything from predicting the strength of the next solar cycle to describing stellar aging hinges on better understanding these fields.
Fundamentals of Time Dilation and Quantum Electrodynamics Confirmed
Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity and Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), which was formulated by Richard Feynman among others, are two important fundamentals of modern physics. In cooperation with colleagues from several international universities and institutes, a research group led by Professor Wilfried Nortershauser (Institute for Nuclear Physics at the Technische Universitat Darmstadt in Germany) re-examined these theories in experiments at the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research. Even though they have been experimentally verified many times in the past and both have passed all the tests so far, these scientists wanted to explore any possible limits of the two theories.
Newest Catalogue of the Visible Milky Way Details 219 Million Stars
A new catalogue of the visible part of the northern part of the Milky Way galaxy has been assembled and it includes no fewer than 219 million stars. Geert Barentsen of the University of Hertfordshire in the UK led the team who assembled the catalogue in a ten year program using the Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma in the Canary Islands.
Do We Live In a 3-D World… or a 2-D Hologram?
A unique experiment at the US Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, near Chicago, Illinois, has started collecting data that will answer some mind-bending questions about our universe — including whether we live in a hologram.
Is Our Universe Just a Bubble in a Sea of Bubbles?
In the beginning there was a vacuum. The vacuum simmered with energy — variously called dark energy, vacuum energy, the inflation field, or the Higgs field. Like water in a boiling pot, this high energy began to evaporate and bubbles formed.
Mysterious X-ray Signal in Perseus May be the First Observed Sign of Dark Matter
A mysterious X-ray signal has been found in a detailed study of galaxy clusters using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA’s XMM-Newton. One intriguing possibility is that the X-rays are produced by the decay of sterile neutrinos, a type of particle that has been proposed as a candidate for dark matter.
Dark Side of the Moon Mystery Solved After 55 Years
When looking up at the full moon, many of us see a “man in the moon” – a face smiling down at us from the lunar surface. The “face,” of course, is just an illusion, shaped by the dark splotches of lunar maria, which are the smooth plains formed from the lava of ancient volcanic eruptions.

Astronomers create first realistic virtual universe
Astronomers have created the first realistic virtual universe using a computer simulation called “Illustris.” Illustris can recreate 13 billion years of cosmic evolution in a cube 350 million light-years on a side with unprecedented resolution.
